This carol was written in 1818, in the Tyrolean village of Hallein, by the local church organist Franz Gruber and a schoolmaster called Joseph Mohr. This resulted in one of the most popular of all carols.

后来有两个商人路过这里，学会了这首歌，他们橘逗为普鲁士国王威廉四陵中世演唱，威廉四世听后大加赞赏，下令把《平安夜》定为全国教堂过圣诞节时必唱的歌曲之一。于是，这首不朽的作品一直传唱至今。

《平安夜》（德语：Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht；英语：Silent Night）是一首广为流传的圣诞颂歌 。这首歌是奥地利的一个小地方的小乡村教会的神父Joseph Mohr在1816年写的歌词，曲作者Franz Gruber是当地的一位默默无闻的音乐老师。
据说当时是因为小教堂的管风琴坏了 ， 所以Mohr神父要Gruber先生为他写的这首歌谱上用吉它伴奏的曲子应急。歌谱后来由修管风琴的人带出来，外面的世界才得以知道这首歌。
平安夜（Silent Night），即圣诞前夕（Christmas Eve，12月24日），在大部分基督教国家是圣诞节的一部分，但现在，由于中西文化的融合，已成为世界性的一个节日。
平安夜传统上是摆设圣诞树的日子，但随着圣诞节的庆祝活动提早开始进行 ，例如美国在感恩节后，不少圣诞树早在圣诞节前数星期已被摆设。
