But the world has been turned on its head in recent years due to the global pandemic and the notion of exactly what makes somewhere "safe" has changed significantly.

The Economist Intelligence Units 2021 Safe Cities Index (SCI) ranks 60 destinations across the world for digital security, health security, infrastructure, personal safety, as well as environmental security, a new category for this year.

10. Sweden, Stockholm:

5. Tokyo, Japan: 2019 winner Tokyo was fifth on this years list, but scored the highest in the health security category.

3. Singapore: it came in second back in 2019, and received 80.7 points overall in the 2021 index.

2. Toronto, Canada: This vibrant Canadian city is one of six that have never fallen out of the top 10 of the Economist Intelligence Units 2021 Safe Cities Index.

1. Copenhagen, Denmark: Copenhagen has taken the top spot for the first time since the report was

launched back in 2015, with an overall score of 82.4 points.

New York was the highest US city on the list, sharing the 11th spot with Spains Barcelona (both cities received 77.8 points).

Washington DC was close behind in 14 place, while London and San Francisco tied at 15th.
