这是1985年乐队发布的第一张专辑。前两首歌是一般的流行摇滚，主题似乎是乐队如何热爱摇滚，虽挫折但得到证明，并没什么可谈的。Leviathan是一首较长的歌，当中有一些夸张的键盘，这是音乐第一次有些前卫，而主题有些难解，似乎表达了一种愤懑。Alaska是最长的两首歌之一，开头是美丽清脆的木吉他伴奏下的优雅演唱，辅以柔美的键盘，中间的键盘solo虽然很poppy，但很好听，最后则是键盘吉他的二重疯狂演奏，主题来说似乎与地球环保有关？歌词有些隐晦，这首歌显然是专辑中的宝石。Circus具有一些长串的夸张solo，但总体来说有些浮夸和没必要，主题似乎是用马戏团作一个隐喻，来表达一些怀疑和不安。Oh Divineo虽然我完全没明白这首歌在说什么，但在这首歌的开头巴雷特第一次淋漓尽致地展现了之的吉他工作，尾声的吉他则有些平庸，但这是一个良好的开始。The Black Knight是另一首史诗，巴雷特继续展现它的吉他才华，这首歌似乎说了一个名为黑骑士的人物，他孤独而无人为伴，又似乎是个类似国王的显要，大概要表达位子越高越没朋友的意思吧，5分50秒开始的吉他有些味了，持续到8分钟的器乐演奏令人着迷，这或许是专辑中最好的歌。在再版中有四首bonus，可以算是bside，Fly High Fall Far是一首流行硬摇滚，其中有一些别出心裁的器乐安排，可以一听。Victims of Life开头充满了没啥作用的、平平无奇的器乐演奏，在演唱后结尾有一些夸张键盘然后趋于平静。Armageddon也是一顿器乐乱奏，像是毫无章法的即兴，纯粹为了感官享受，只是听起来更加硬摇滚一些，怪不得只能是bside。最后一首bonus是Insomnia，像是前两首bonus的缩短版，依旧充满了自以为是的器乐和一些硬摇滚风格。在我看来《The Jewel》的确有几首歌是宝石，比如Alaska、Oh Divineo、Oh Divineo和Fly High Fall Far，但其他几首歌有些次了，但瑕不掩瑜，依然可以一听。而可惜的是彭德拉贡的第二张专辑居然延续了那几首较次的歌曲的风格，而把前卫性丢弃了。
