Song of the Crouching Dragon
Song of the Crouching Dragon
Song of the Crouching DragonSince boyhood, I’ve studied the classics
towards excellence in self-cultivation.
Now well-versed in the ways of the universe,
I claim to be a fine strategist.
A humble farmer though I am, tilling my land,
I’ve always been concerned about the state.
Yet my zeal is for whom to know? I’m like
a phoenix longing for high winds beneath its wings.
But the chaotic times plunge me into deep sighs.
Thrice did His Lordship visit my cottage in person,
where we chatted cordially, sitting knee to knee.
To meet a soul-mate in middle age –
what a blessing to an unknown man like me!
Wearing a silk kerchief and weaving my feather fan,
I’ll join his service tomorrow, my sword in hand.
The dragon lifts off at the meeting of wind and cloud.
Venting my sentiments at this opportune moment,
I let out a cry, long and loud.
Yet my dream will remain unchanged –
I’ll be back, after our cause is accomplished,
and go on tilling my land.
Amidst the breeze and moonlight, then,
apes and cranes will hear me play the zither again.
The world is full of changes.
And who can tell about the future for sure?
Yet human efforts do make a difference.
Having promised my service,
I’ll serve with full dedication.
A man is supposed to accomplish something in his life,
doing his best to bring peace to the times.
Yet my dream will remain unchanged –
I’ll be back, after our cause is accomplished,
and go on tilling my land.
Amidst the breeze and moonlight, then,
apes and cranes will hear me play the zither again.
