When: April 5, 1614
What: Pocahontas, daughter of the chief of the Powhatan Indian confederacy, married English tobacco planter John Rolfe in Jamestown, Virginia.
Why significant: The marriage fostered peace between the Jamestown settlers and the Powhatan Indians for several years. Pocahontas contributed significantly to the early survival of the Jamestown colony.
At the time, Jamestown–the first permanent English outpost in North America–was precarious, largely because of Indian hostility to the colony and its expansion. But Pocahontas became a frequent visitor to the settlement and befriended the English Colonists. The legend has it that she saved the lives of some colonists by warning them of an ambush. She learned English customs and converted to Christianity. She eventually married an English colonist John Rolfe. Following the marriage, peace prevailed between the English and the Native Americans.
After the marriage, Pocahontas visited England. She was entertained at royal festivities, and proved popular among the gentry as the Indian princess. She was also used in propaganda as an example of Anglo-Indian harmony, of missionary success among the natives, and of the prospect that Indians could be persuaded to adopt English ways.
But before her return to North America, Pocahontas died from illness in 1617. With her death, the fragile peace between colonists and Indians eroded.
