This time of year is all about good wishes but did you know that many of these good wishes are edible?
每年的这个时候都有满满的祝福，那么大家知道许多祝福是可以"吃"的吗？
Here are eight lucky New Year foods in the Chinese tradition and why theyre lucky.
接下来我们就一起了解八种这样的中国传统食物，并看看它们怎样表达祝福。
Now, where to start?
我们从哪个开始呢？
No.1 Long life noodles
一. 长寿面
Wish everyone and yourself a long life by eating very long noodles without cutting them.
吃长寿面，祝福自己和大家健康长寿，这种面条很长，因为没有切过。
Slurping is allowed — your longevity is at stake.
吃的时候应该吸食——你能有多长寿就在此一举了。
No.2 Dumplings
二. 饺子
You never need an excuse to eat dumplings but now you have a reason to eat MORE!
平时吃饺子是不需要理由的，但现在你有理由多吃一点！
These are ingots.
这是元宝。
They used to be a form of currency in China and they were made of gold and silver and dumplings look like them.
过去在中国是一种货币，材质为金或银，这些饺子的形状和元宝一样。
The idea is the more you eat, the more money youll have.
寓意吃的越多，以后挣的钱越多。
I am a millionaire.
我是百万富翁啦。
No.3 Spring rolls
三. 春卷
If you didnt get rich from all those dumplings before, thats ok.
如果之前吃了饺子没变富也没关系。
Have some spring rolls which represent solid gold bars.
那再吃些形似金条的春卷吧。
Wow,14 karats!
哇，足有14克拉哦！
No.4 A whole fish
四. 一整条鱼
Having the head and the tail of the fish symbolises a good beginning and a good ending for the coming year.
吃鱼头和鱼尾象征来年从头到尾好运连连。
Also, the word fish in Chinese sounds like the word for surplus.
并且，在汉语里，"鱼"和"富余"的"余"谐音。
No.5 Festive fruits
五. 节庆水果
See how bright and round these oranges are?
看到这些橙子有多润多圆了吗？
Just like a big lump of gold which is why theyre a symbol of wealth.
就像一大块金子，因此也象征着财富。
And the word orange in Chinese sounds like the word for success.
在汉语里，"橙"和"成功"的"成"谐音。
Here are some liquid assets I prepared earlier.
这是我准备的液态的"黄金"。
I want you to dump 40 per cent and short the rest.
我要你把股票抛售40%，其余的做空。

No.6 Year Cake
六. 年糕
This is nian gao, a sweet and sticky cake made of glutinous rice flour.
这是年糕，一种由糯米粉制成的甜而粘的蛋糕。
Nian gao means year cake, but it also sounds exactly the same as nian gao which is the word year followed by the word tall.
年糕就是在新年吃的蛋糕，但听起来很像"年高"，意味着一年比一年高。
So may each new year be taller for you.
是在祝福你越长越高。
May you reach new heights: a promotion, a raise, more cake!
祝你身体长高，职位升高，薪资涨高，年年高！

No.7 Sweet rice dumplings
七. 汤圆
New Year is all about family reunions.
新年还要全家团圆。
For dessert we eat tang yuan and we say tuan tuan yuan yuan.
汤圆是我们的甜点，意味着"团团圆圆"。
Tuan yuan means reunion and yuan means round.
"团圆"就是重聚，"圆"是"围着"的意思。
So the aim is to have the whole family around the table together and the rice ball is round like the table.
所以我们会全家人围坐在一起，饭团像桌子一样也是圆的。
Its pun for the whole family!
"圆"既指食物的形状，也是和家人团圆的意思，一语双关！
Wheres my family?
话说我的家人们呢？
No.8 The togetherness box
八. 团圆礼盒
This is a quan he.
这是一个全盒。
Its a collection of snacks — mostly sweets for visitors or for me.
里面有许多小吃，大多是给客人准备的甜食，当然，还有我。
Mostly for me.
主要是我。
These are melon seeds or gua zi.
这是瓜子，我们称之为"瓜子"。
It sounds a lot like the saying nian sheng gui zi which means to give birth to sons.
瓜子有"年生贵子"之意，就是生儿子。
What about daughters?
那女儿呢？
Im a daughter.
我就是女儿啊。
Mum, what about daughters? !
妈妈，为啥不说"年生女儿"？！
These are lotus seeds or lian zi.
这些是莲的种子，我们称"莲子"。
Again, it sounds like that whole give birth to sons thing.
同样，也有"年生贵子"的意思。
Or daughters!
或者女儿！
These are lotus roots.
这些是莲的根。
Theyre called lian ou which sounds like the word for abundance.
我们称之为"莲藕"，有"连"年"有"余之意。
And these are white rabbit lollies, because compulsory.
这些大白兔奶糖在新年也必不可少。
Hold on. . . abundance, giving birth to children, rabbits, seeds, fertility.
稍等……富足，孩子，大白兔，瓜子，生育。
Mum, are you sending me a message through this box?
妈，你是想借这个全盒提醒我什么吗？
How did we get from No dating! to Where are my grandchildren?
怎么就从"禁止约会"过渡到了"我孙子孙女在哪儿"了呢？
