Why Sinkiang (新疆) Belongs to China (中国)?

Part I: How it all Began

The answer is simple, and that is the Han Dynasty (漢朝).

(Map of modern China with the Han Dynasty’s former range carved to set comparison)

The Han Dynasty set the foundation for Sinkiang to become an inalienable part of the Chinese civilization.

This is was the time when our race became associated with the Han Chinese (漢族).

But before I do that, let me explain on what I am doing here:

This is a personal Quora “mini-series” in the form of a trilogy. Here I will explain from my own research and my own rationale of how Sinkiang became part of Chinese civilization and why Sinkiang is an inseparable part of China. Sinkiang does not belong to the Han Chinese, Sinkiang belongs to the Chinese nation

Part I - How it all Began

Sinkiang’s Etymology

Modern Perceptions of Sinkiang & Uighur Identity

Han Dynasty & Hsi-yu Relations: Beginnings of Chinese Influence

Part II - The Golden Age, Islam & the Mongols

Silk Roads: Buddhi *** , Trade & Security

T’ang Dynasty: China at Her Peak

The Rise of Islam & the Mongol Empire: The Emergence of Modern Uighur Identity

Part III - Sinkiang and the Modern Era

Ch’ing Dynasty: Becoming Sinkiang Province

Post-Imperial Era: Sinkiang within Modern China

Concluding Points

Today in Part I, I will explain why it has to be the Han Dynasty that permanently incorporated Sinkiang into our civilization. At the same time I will begin by disproving some myths and misconceptions about this mysterious land and its people. Without further adieu lets begin this historical adventure!

PART I: How it all Began

I. Sinkiang’s Etymology

The name Sinkiang (新疆) means “Western Frontier”. Traditionally we Chinese refer to the area of Sinkiang as Hsi-yu (西域) meaning “Western Realms”. The beautiful land of vast uninhibited deserts, mountains, prairies with dotted oases at the foot of the T’ien Shan (天山), Kwenlun Mountains (崑崙山) and Altai Mountains (阿爾泰山脈).

II. Modern Perceptions of Sinkiang & Uighur Identity

Sinkiang is atypical of what the ordinary Joe(普通人) would think of China because it looks nothing like what most people perceive as quintessential China!

When most foreigners think of Sinkiang as of 2021, they think of the Sinkiang Uighur Autonomous Region (新疆維吾爾自治區) currently under the governance of the People’s Republic of China (中華人民共和國) or the PRC。

With that kind of name, most people would associate it being the land designated for the Uighur people (維吾爾族), an ethnic group mostly associated with being of part Caucasoid/part Mongoloid stock along with being a member of the Islamic religion. They are a people with a completely different ethnicity, culture and lifestyle from the majority Han Chinese (漢族).

There are groups of people who either think Islam is native to Sinkiang and the Uighurs are an indigenous people. Western media constantly accuse the PRC government for diluting the Uighur culture.

I know what many of you are thinking, I am going to defend the PRC government.

The answer is no, far from it. In fact there are some truths towards the PRC’s history of treating local cultures and religions. The CCP is an atheistic party to the core that values extreme pragmati *** over any forms of ethics and morality. It is the definition of amorality.

However with that being said, the notion that Islam was always the native religion of the Uighurs and that Sinkiang was an independent country annexed by “China” is completely false.

The original people of the area that’s now called Sinkiang were not even Uighurs. In fact Islam was pretty recent for the Uighur people. Nevertheless back when Sinkiang was still called Hsi-yu, the term Uighur or Sinkiang didn’t even exist! Sinkiang was and is a melting pot!

What’s funny is that Sinkiang was quintessentially known as a “Buddhist cultural area” in ancient times because of the Silk Roads!

But the goal isn’t about whether to judge which camp is righteous. It isn’t about Uighur identity or the peoples who used to live in the area.

This answer is about how and why Sinkiang became a legitimate part of China and like I said it all starts with the Han Dynasty!
