What are some of the most stunning yet most terrifying images?[1]
This is Christinas World by Andrew Wyeth.
At first glance, its a simplistically beautiful painting of a young woman relaxing in a field. But upon closer inspection, theres something not quite right. The womans pose doesnt look so relaxed after all. It almost looks like shes struggling. Her wrist looks red and swollen. The sky is a dreary grey as well as the houses in the background, the grass is not lush, but dull, almost dead looking. Suddenly the painting isnt so easily interpreted.
This painting was inspired by the Wyeths neighbor, Anna Christina Olson. She developed a degenerative muscle condition in her youth that left her unable to walk. Olson did not use a wheelchair. Instead, she crawled everywhere she went. In addition, Olson was not young at the time Wyeth painted this. She was in her fifties. Its implied to be more of a portrayal of the subjects mind than a portrait. I dont know. To me, theres just something subtly horrifying about the whole thing. Cant quite put my finger on it.
